Movie costumes play a huge role in transforming the actresses and actors into the characters they portray. Some characters are known for their iconic movie costumes and are cosplayers’ dreams.
These are the most iconic movie costumes from some of our favourite films.
Henry Jones Jr. (portrayed by Harrison Ford), aka Indiana Jones, aka Docter Jones, aka Indy, has a unique sense of style. Indiana Jones has one of the most recognizable movie costumes of all time and isn’t too hard to copy. All you need really is a whip, a hat, and an Indian Jones-like sense of adventure.
We’re unable to choose which one of our beloved Princess Leia (portrayed by the late Carrie Fischer)’s movie costumes we love the most, because she has some iconic fashion moments throughout the Star Wars franchise. From her famous Leia buns in A New Hope (1977), her gold bikini in Return of the Jedi (1983) to her General’s outfit in The Force Awakens (2016). She definitely shares her love for fashion with her parents. Padme has some beautiful and intricate movie costumes and Darth Vader’s suit is one of the most iconic movie costumes of all time too.
Leave out the most stylish teenager of the 90s? As if! Cher Horowitz (portrayed by Alicia Silverstone) lived the American dream and her closet was heaven. One of her most memorable movie costumes is the yellow checkered suit she picks out from her rotating closet and her 90s styling program.
The late and great Heath Ledger transformed into one of the most psychotic Superman villains of all time. The makeup, movie costumes and Ledger’s incredible acting brought this character chillingly to life in the 2008 movie, The Dark Knight.
Wonder Woman is the very definition of functional fashion. Her awesome amazonian costume also helps her fight bad guys and keep Earth safe.
Portrayed by arguably the most famous woman to ever live, Lorelei Lee’s pink outfit in the 1953 movie, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, is one of those movie costumes you never forget. Marilyn Monroe filled out that costume like no one else could and thousands have recreated the dramatic look.
Everyone who loves the Back to the Future franchise has wanted to copy Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox)’s outfit in the second movie in the popular trilogy. In Back to the Future II, Marty McFly is taken into the future from 1985 to 2015. In order for him to blend him, Doc Brown gives him some of the coolest Nike sneakers ever and the rest of his futuristic outfit has become one of the most beloved movie costumes of all time.
Everyone alive who has witnessed this fashion moment by Audrey Hepburn has tried to recreate it. It’s one of those movie costumes that people even copy without knowing they are copying the look from the 1961 movie, Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
We might never learn what Uma Thurman’s character’s name in The Kill Bill franchise is, but we certainly will never forget her yellow jumpsuit. We love how fit and fierce she looks in the jumpsuit and the fact that she’s wearing matching sneakers just makes this outfit even cooler.
Newt Scamander (portrayed by Eddie Redmayne) might be a new character, but his outfit has already become iconic for fans of the Fantastic Beasts franchise. The magical world created by J.K. Rowling is filled with many interesting movie costumes and we especially love that Fantastic Beasts is set in 1920s New York City.
Everyone immediately recognises this costume worn by Mel Gibson as William Wallace in the famous 1995 movie, Braveheart.
Another franchise that has some amazing movie costumes is The Matrix. The person with the best style in The Matrix and in The Real World alike has to be Neo (portrayed by Keanu Reeves). From his shades, to his leather pants and his long jacket, we love this character’s movie costumes throughout the iconic trilogy.
Captain Jack Sparrow
We couldn’t imagine anyone other than Johnny Depp portraying the role of Captain Jack Sparrow in Disney’s Pirates of the Carribean franchise. He not only looks the part, but once he wears his pirate’s outfit, he truly embodies a scoundrel of the sea.
Another character portrayed by Jonny Depp to wear one of the most memorable movie costumes ever, is Willy Wonka. This chocolate factory owner has a unique sense of style and we absolutely applaud his look.
Wizards aren’t particularly known for being fashion forward, but Gandalf the White (portrayed by Sir Ian McKellen) looks awesome in The Lord of the Rings movies.
